This week's awesome story o' glory is from one of our masters athletes. It's true Chris has been with us for a few years now, but it barely took any time at all for him to find his home here at UB.
Joined UB June 2012
My journey with United Barbell began on May 27, 2012 when I was apartment hunting in San Francisco. I heard about United Barbell from several friends in Dallas. On my way back to SFO, I dropped by the Box, where I met Coach Trent (aka T-Pain) and and inquired about CrossFit in SF. While contemplating whether I should join, I had the opportunity to have my first T-Pain encounter: "What's it going to be Bro?"
I signed up immediately.
June 16, 2012 was my first CrossFit workout at United Barbell; Tupac's Birthday. Coach Kristin coached a WOD dedicated to Tupac and lit me up. Now, I had been doing CrossFit for two years and had no idea what hit me because I was often holding back, afraid to be present and afraid to channel intensity in workouts. United Barbell and the superb coaching helped me chose differently from day one. Members challenged me to get my Level 1 certificate, and the coaches, in particular Coach James, started addressing my hesitation and calling me forth to be present which in essence allowed me to address my challenges, while having fun.
United Barbell has consistently provided opportunities for an athlete to grow and learn. Whether it is through a WOD, SWOD or Olympic Lifting Classes, open gym, private training, or just throwing down with your squad for Barbell WOD, there are multiple opportunities to grow and become the athlete and person you want to become.
But be careful what you ask for!
You see the other aspect of the United Barbell is the Community. This Community is made up of people who are very talented human beings and supportive of your growth as a person. When you declare what type of athlete you want to be, be ready for the Community to support you. Whether it is a local competition, a the CrossFit Open, a Team Competition or your first individual competition, rest assured that when you are struggling with a weight on that last rep and don't you can go any further, someone from UB will call your name and give you that level of encouragement. You may hear your nickname (especially if I gave it to you), you may hear a coach, or you may hear a song that you often heard in the Box, that reminds you that UB is in the house. This is guaranteed for the new CrossFitter to the elite level athletes like Coach James, Coach Trent and Colleen Fotsch - aka Zapatos aka 'MSG- Mad Shoe Game.'
And the Community has a sense of making a difference. United Barbell played host to my non-profit organization's (Westside Athlete Association), first fundraiser, helping us raise over $11,000. Moreover, many of Board of Directors and Officers of Westside Athletes Association are also members of United Barbell.
So what has UB meant to me in my 2 1/2 years? Well aside from creating great friendships with people in the Box, and making a difference and impact in the community in which I live, I have transformed from a spectator to a competitor (Two CrossFit Opens, Three in house competitions- Ultimate Lift Off, four team competitions and one recent individual competition).
Thus, if you want to be in an accountable, encouraging, inspiring and supportive community, look no further, as United Barbell can be your gateway to total transformation.
