This week's awesome is someone who I have watched grow hungry. When she first started, she was very shy with her intentions and goals. As time passed, this beastress grew stronger and let her competitive drive grow. She started to be empowered, feeling both strong and beautiful. Since then, she has continued, in my eyes, to be a leader in our community by speaking her mind and helping women who interact with her find the same empowerment. While we miss her other half (who has been out recovering from injury), she has continued to show up (when she isn't traveling for work) and push her limits to become better every day. Yana, thanks for being an inspiration - you are truly awesome!!
Name: Yana Yushkina
Nickname / Alter Ego: YY
Hometown: Vladivostok, Russia though Seattle is my US "hometown"
Occupation: Product Manager on Google Chrome
When did you first start CrossFitting?: Early 2014
When did you first start CrossFitting at UB?: I dropped in on my first class in April 2014 but did not start for real until September of that year
Favorite WOD: Anything with overhead squats. Shoulder stability is my friend.
Least favorite WOD: Anything with lots of kipping pull-ups. I have wimpy hands and a poor kip.
How did you first get exposed to CrossFit? Through my better half, Robb.
What is an unexpected way CrossFit has affected your life? It's made me appreciate looking like I have muscles. Growing up in Russia and spending much of my youth in rhythmic gymnastics and ballroom dance, I was constantly bombarded with messages that the ideal female body looked stick-thin and betrayed no presence of muscles. Now I'm actually happy that I look (deceptively) strong.
